Sri Pashupathi Ashtakam by Prithvipathi /Lord Vishnu – Lyrics and meanings

 “I shall always meditate upon Lord Mahesha who resides in  Rajathagiri/silver mountain/Mount Kailash, his face has the luster of moon, his limbs has the effulgence of precious gems, he is wielded in fierce weapon Parashu, he is attired in the skin of animal, he has pleasing disposition, he is seated on lotus flower, he is surrounded and eulogized  by deities and Rishis and Sages/Vyaghra, he is worshiped in the whole Universe, he is the source of Universe and its living beings, he is omnipresent, he is Hara who is the safest haven to worshiper, he have five faces and three eyes on each faces. “


“ Oh! Manuja/human, always meditate upon Girijapathi who is the consort of Goddess Sri Girija/daughter of Mount Himavan, he is Pashupathi who is the Lord of animals, he is Lord of Indhu/Indhupathi, he is Dharanipathi/Lord of Earth, he is the Lord of world of serpents/Bhujagalokapathi, he is Sathipathi/Lord of Uma, he eradicates all the miseries and perils of deities and fervent devotees, he is beyond human intellect, therefore always meditate upon Lord Girijapathi. Oh! Manuja, he is the source of Universe and its living beings, without his presence there is no living beings on Earth, or era,  or Janani, or brother or offspring, he is the source of strength of the clan, therefore always meditate upon Lord Girijapathi. Oh! Manuja, he is accompanied by the divine sounds of Dindivadhya, he is proficient in Veda and Vedantha, he is worshiped by illustrious Bhoothaganas, therefore always meditate upon Lord Girijapathi.  Oh! Manuja, he is the safest haven to worshiper, he is the provider of happiness and welfare, he is Shiva who symbolizes auspiciousness, he is deserved to be venerated and eulogized,  he is too compassionate, he is the ultimate refuge, he is the provider of abundance of boons to worshiper, therefore always meditate upon Lord Girijapathi.  Oh! Manuja, he is decked in garlands of skull, he is adorned in magnificent earrings, he is decorated in serpents as ornaments, he has flag that carries the symbol of Vrishabha/celestial bull, he is fair complexioned, he has great effulgence, therefore always meditate upon Lord Girijapathi.  Oh! Manuja, he symbolizes auspiciousness, he is decorated in crescent moon on matted hair locks, he should be worshiped with specific rites and he provides abundance of pieties for the performance of fire sacrifices, he causes deluge that absorbs all the living beings and Universe at the end of Kalpa, therefore always meditate upon Lord Girijapathi.  Oh! Manuja, he should be meditated with intense faith and devotion, he eradicates all that perils and miseries of  Maranam/death, Jananam/birth, and Jara/aging in the world of Samsara, therefore always meditate upon Lord Girijapathi.  Oh! Manuja, he is worshiped by Lord Hari, Lord Bhrama, and all the deities, he is reverentially greets by Yama and Dhanesha/Kubera, he have three eyes, he is the Lord of three worlds, therefore always meditate upon Lord Girijapathi.”


The above are the glorious verses of Pashupathi Ashtakam praising the splendor of Lord Pashupathi was composed by Prithvipathi/Lord Vishnu, whoever reads or listens to it on regular basis  would permanently reside in the abode of Lord Shiva/Shivapuri.
