Sri Gita Govinda Mahakavyam - Sri Jayadeva Ashtapadi – 9 - Lyrics and meanings

|| Jai Sriman Narayana ||

“Oh! Krishna, my dearest companion Radharani assumes herself as antelope that explore through the dense wood and her companion as hunters with the net, forest fire exaggerates her excruciating pain of separation, cupid arrows of Manmatha multiply tortures as a tiger in search of its prey.”

“ Oh !, Krishna,  Sri Radharani has emaciated due to the separation from you and the cupid arrows of Manmatha, therefore the precious garland on her large and high raised bosom became a burden to her.  Oh! Krishna, due to the pain of separation from you Sri Radharani feels the soft and highly fragrant sandal paste smeared on her body as a poison that stained all over her body.  Oh! Krishna, she feels her breathe is deceptive, she is completely emaciated by the cupid arrows of Manmatha.  Oh! Krishna, her lotus flower petals like eyes filled with tears that continuously releases glances in desperation,  like dewdrops from the lotus flower scatters all over while plucking from its stem.  Oh! Krishna, she stares at the bed made of fresh creepers and flowers in perplexity and imagines it as a firestorm.  Oh! Krishna, she takes shelter in solitude, her lotus hands squash her cheeks in utter desolation, resembles the moon in nightfall.  Oh! Krishna, due to the intense pain of separation and the excruciating pain of cupid arrows of Manmatha, she continuously uttering your names with intense love “Hari, Hari” and sincerely wishes to give up her life.”

The above are the glorious verses composed by Sri Jayadeva, which bestow happiness to virtuous who are surrendered at the lotus feet of  Lord Keshava.

“Radharani is undergoing extreme pain of separation from Lord Krishna, her bodily hairs stands straight in a state of ecstasy, sometimes she struggles to catch up breathe due to extreme grief, she quivers in fear, she meditate upon Lord Krishna, she feels disoriented, she closes her eyes tightly, she falls on the ground and raises up, she faints, she is troubled with the fever of unique kind out of separation from Lord Krishna who is the supreme physician, she is in vital need of amorous sport, kindly provide her with the requirements otherwise you may not avail her.  Oh! Upendra/younger brother to Lord Indhra,  Oh! Vaidhyahridhaya/supreme physician, she can get cured only with the medicine of divine union with you, kindly release her from the excruciating pain of separation, otherwise distress inflicted  would be vicious than the powerful weapon Vajrayudha of Lord Indra.  Radharani is afflicted with the unique kind of fever caused by the cupid arrows of Manmatha, though she is smothered with the highly fragrant smell of sandal paste, cool rays of moon and lotus flowers does not give her any comfort, you are the only one beloved who could provide cool breeze of solace, therefore she sincerely meditates upon you to regain her Prana.  Radharani could not bear a momentarily separation from you, not even a blink of an eye, how she is going to stay alive during the separation from you, especially when the mango trees are brimming with its flowers.  Oh! Kamsadhvisha, who is the enemy of Kamsa, you have elevated the Mount Govardhana with your powerful arms, in this way you have protected the cowherds and woods of Gokulam from the heavy downpour, eventually, you have augmented the happiness of the cowherds of Vraja, the young maidens and married women of cowherds continuously kissed on your arms leaving the marks of vermilion from their forehead,  Oh! Krishna, who has assumed the form of cowherd with powerful arms, kindly showers your auspicious grace on us too.”
