Sri Gita Govinda Mahakavyam - Sri Jayadeva Ashtapadi – 16 - Lyrics and meanings

|| Jai Sriman Narayana ||

The poet describes, “Oh! Sakhi, I suppose he is merciless, why he did not come to you? What was your fault? He must be in the association of young maidens of Vraja and he must be taking immense pleasure in the passionate sport with them, I am completely overwhelmed by his attractiveness and virtues, I am longing for the association of him, my intellect goes behind him.  Oh! Sakhi, Vanamali has the eyes resembles blue lilies, even the branches of trees bearing fresh leaves would yearn for his presence, Oh! Sakhi, Vanamali has an attractive face resembles to fully blossomed lotus flower; his face is besieged by the cupid arrows of Manmatha, Oh! Sakhi,  Vanamali speak in sweet nectar-like words, even the scorching heat of Malaya breeze will not do any harm,  Oh! Sakhi, Vanamali has soft and supple feet that are cool and lustrous, it will not flutter in the chillness of moon,  Oh! Sakhi, Vanamali excels the beauty of fresh rain clouds, therefore the heaviness of heart due to pain of separation will do no harm.  Oh! Sakhi, Vanamali is attired in a marvelous garment that has the luster of gold; he will not strike at the laugh of his own people/followers, Oh! Sakhi, Vanamali is the protector of the living beings in the Universe and he is the provider of an abundance of boons to them, he is too compassionate.”  The above are the glorious verses of Sri Jayadeva which describes the endless virtues of Hari.  “Kindly bring Madhava for a moment, he is the delight to my heart, smeared in sandal paste and has lustrous blue complexion, afterward take away my life.  Oh! Sakhi, the association of dearest companions makes me feels in the middle of enemies, even the cool breeze or moon rays does not provide any solace and makes me feel like encircled by poison, waiting for the arrival of Little Krishna inflicts intense pain in my heart, just like any beautiful young maidens of Vraja who have attractive eyes resembles lotus flower undergoes the cupid arrows of Manmatha, Oh! Panchabana/ cupid arrows of Manmatha resemble fresh cool rays of Malaya are capable to take out my life; you can have my life afterward, Oh! Krithanthabhagini/Kalindhi who has beautiful waves kindly drench my limbs in your water and pacifies the thirst of my limbs. Oh! Achyutha who is the attired in magnificent yellow silk garment, has the lustrous blue complexion, Radharani was mystified at his appearance, they laughed and performed various amusements along with the attractive young maidens of Vraja, she was timid, her eyes were restless, they blissfully enjoyed the amorous sport with the Nandhathmaja/dearest son of Nandha who is the provider of happiness to the Universe/Jagadhanandha.”

|| Jai Sriman Narayana ||

Radharani has become distraught after seeing her close companions returning without Madhava, she suspected that Janardhana must be taking pleasure in the company of fortunate young maidens of Vraja, “  The young maidens who are attired in magnificent garments, long beautiful hairs decked in fresh alluring flower garlands must be taking immense delight in the company of Madhuripu.  These young maidens must be in a state of bliss remaining in the embrace of Hari, eventually their garlands and precious ornaments decorated on the large and high raised bosom must be intertwining during the passionate sport with Madhuripu.  The curly hair locks stretched on the moon-like faces of young maidens of Vraja must be multiplying their loveliness, and they must be tactfully consuming the nectar from the lips of Madhuripu, closing their eyes in a state of bliss.  The magnificent earrings adorned in the ears must be hanging close to their cheeks of the young maidens enhances the loveliness of them and the bell decorated waist belts must be making tinkling noises during the passionate sport.  These beautiful young maidens must be smiling shyly at the attractive glances of beloved Krishna, and they must be making various noises during the passionate sport with Madhuripu.  These beautiful young maidens must be in an extreme state of ecstasy and their body must be quivering in amorous sport and must be completely wrapped up with Madhuripu, and releasing a sigh of liberation.  These beautiful young maidens must be soaked in the droplets of perspiration from the amorous sport with Madhuripu, they must be feeling blissful staying in the embrace of Krishna/Ranadhira.”  The above are the glorious verses composed by Sri Jayadeva, which depicts the amorous sport of Lord Hari, which is capable to eradicate all the evil effects of the Kali era.

Sri Gita Govinda Mahakavyam - Sri Jayadeva Ashtapadi – 13 - Lyrics and meanings

|| Jai Sriman Narayana ||

The cool rays of the moon appeared all through the woods of Vrindavan as soon as the hours of nightfall, all directions are attired in marvelous garments, decorated its beautiful faces smeared in sandal paste with the attractive spot of the moon.  At the arrival cool rays of the moon, Radharani realized the absence of Madhava, it was unbearable for her, she wept bitterly “My flawless beauty and youth has become futile, Hari did not arrive in the woods in the promised hours, I have been deceived by my close companions, where do I seek refuge? I have arrived in the woods during the dark and chill hours of night in search of him, alas! My heart is throbbing with the pain of arrows; I cannot bear the painful blaze of separation any longer, it’s meaningless to stay alive, I have to embrace death, I am unfortunate, Hari must be in the association of young maidens of Vraja during this beautiful nectar-like spring night and those maidens are truly fortunate to attain the fruit of their piousness.  All these bangles and ornaments decorated in my body tortures me like a blaze in the separation from Hari.  The flower garlands decorated on my chest causes intolerable pain of cupid arrows of Manmatha, I am patiently waiting for the arrival of him in the middle of dark woods of cane, Alas! Madhsoodhana does not have any feelings for me.” The above are the glorious verses composed by Sri Jayadeva who is fervent devotee at the lotus feet of Hari, depicts the wretched state of beautiful young Radharani who is delicate and symbol of mystic love dwells in the heart of Hari.  “Krishna is dear to my life, why most celebrated Krishna did not appear in the creeper house? Or is he completely absorbed in the association of young maidens of Vraja? Or is he lost in the darkness of woods? Or Is he completely besieged by the pain of separation and finding it difficult to walk down to the lovely creeper home?”

Sandhya is converging point of night & early hours of dawn, morning & afternoon and evening & night/early hours of dusk.  Sandhya Vandhanam is a ritual performed during the above mentioned three most propitious hours of a day, practice of worship of Lord Surya during the above mentioned periods of time is called Sandhya Vandhanam.  Sandhya is three particular period of time of a day known as early hours of dawn, noon and evening.  There are six important activities involved in the practice of Sandhya Vandhanam such as Achamaneeyam, Pranayamam, Sankalpam, Arkhyapradhanam, recitation of Gayathri hymns and Upasthanam.  Achamaneeyam is recitation of sacred hymn such as Acchuthaya Nama: Ananthaya Nama: Govindaya Nama: with the pure water.  Pranayama is the practice of releasing the lungful of air methodically which we have already consumed, holding the nose with the thumb finger and taking lungful of air  and releasing the air meticulously through the  nose by holding the other nose with the ring finger.  Sankalpam is the process of offering salutation to the hour of performance of Sandhyavandhanam.  Arkhyapradhana means offering of pure water to supreme Lord Surya and deities, and Pithrus/ancestors, followed by sacred chants.  It is one of most significant process in the performance of Sandhyavandhanam, it is believed that thirty thousand and millions of valorous and dreadful demons Mantheha will be waiting to swallow Lord Surya during the hours of Sandhya.  Therefore deities, Rishis and Sages performs Arkhyapradhanam during the hours of Sandhya in order to protect Lord Surya from the vicious demons, it is also believed that the water poured as Arkhya will transform into fierce weapons made of Vajra/diamond, and this would protect Lord Surya from the threat of the demons, therefore Bhramins on the Earth also follow the same practice.  Sandhyavandhanam is performed by people who had their Upanayanam/Bhramopadhesha/ sacred thread ritual, it is usually performed by Bhramin, Vaniya, potters and Kshathriya, but recitation of Gayathri is destined to Bhramins.  Children while performance of Bhramopadhesha offer salutations to their parents assuming them as Goddess Saraswathi and Lord Bhrama respectively, offers water on their feet, meditates upon Lord Bhrama and Goddess Saraswathi, there after receives the sacred hymns of Gayathri in their ears.  The recitation of sacred Gayathri hymns provides the meritorious reward of recitation of four Vedas.  The sacred hymns of Gayathri consists 24 sacred syllables, consists of 24 Rishis, Agni and deities, it has 24 Chandhas, 24 philosophies, and 24 Shakthis.  Gayathri hymns should be recited systematically 108 or 54 or 27 times.  It should be recited meticulously and it should be recited in heart.  Karmas are classified into three such as  Nithya Karma/it is known as daily obligatory duties, Naimithika/it is occasional obligatory duties, and Kamya Karma/rites performed to fulfill desires.  Sandhya Vandhanam  falls into the category of Nithya Karma and it is daily obligatory duty, Kamya Karma is not at all necessary to follow, but abandoning Nithya Karma/Sandhyavandhanam is treated as greatest sin and the person who does not follow this rite is considered as impure/sinner.  A person who does not follow the ritual of Sandhyavandhanam is considered as impure and he will automatically lose the right to perform any of the spiritual or ceremonial rite, or fire sacrifices, and it is definite that he will not benefit any of the meritorious reward of the spiritual deeds.  It is evident that attainment of knowledge of Bhramam and pleasure of senses/satisfaction/contentment are very important aspect in human life.  Person who does not follow Vedic way of life or Adhyayanam or Upasana will not be considered as ‘Dvija’/twice born/child born from mother’s womb take re-birth at the time of performance of sacred thread ceremony.  Person who strictly follows the rite of Sandhyavandhanam gets purified from the sins committed by words, thoughts and deeds.

Sri Gita Govinda Mahakavyam - Sri Jayadeva Ashtapadi – 12 - Lyrics and meanings

|| Jai Sriman Narayana ||

Radharani was sitting in the house-made of creepers; she was all exhausted to proceed further, though she was sincerely devoted to Krishna, Radharani's dearest companion describes her wretched state to Govinda “  Oh! Natha, Oh! Hare, kindly protect Radharani who is besieged with the pain of separation, she is taking refuge in solitude; she is desirously waiting to drink the nectar from your lips, your dearest companion Radharani is besieged with sorrow, she is making all efforts to move and stumbles down, she had made elaborate preparations, her the prime objective is to perform the amorous sport with you, she has attained a supreme state of devotion, ultimately she had obtained eternal union with you, eventually, she considers herself as Madhuripu.  She repeatedly enquiring her close companion that why Hari did not come to meet?  During the hours of darkness, she envisions that Hari has arrived and embraces him and kisses the cloud-like form of Krishna, when she realizes that it was not real, she cries out loudly without any shyness.  The above are the glorious verses of Sri Jayadeva, let it provide all kinds of happiness to the people who take immense pleasure in the passionate sport of Radha Krishna.  Oh! Krishna, Radharani who has the eyes of antelope, she is undergoing intense pain of separation, she is completely besieged by the cupid arrows of Manmatha, her body is quivering with an intense desire for amorous sport with you, she is immersed in your thoughts, her voices are trailing, eventually she meditates upon you.  Radharani has decorated herself with various ornaments, and she is zealously waiting for your arrival, she is arranging the bed of creepers and envision your presence, she is completely immersed in the thoughts of passionate sport with you, it is impossible for her to live without you  Oh! Natha, Oh! Hare.  Oh! Krishna, while I was taking rest under the Bandira tree, she enquired Oh! Bhrathara/brother, why don’t you go to the palace of Nanda which is visible from here? Govinda praised the cowherd who conveyed messages of Radharani.

Bhaja Govindam by Sri Adishankaracharya – Lyrics and meanings

|| Jai Sriman Narayana ||

Oh! Ignorant, meditate upon Govinda !  Worship upon lotus feet of Govinda ! Knowledge about the rules of Grammar will not save you at the time of death, Oh! Ignorant, leave your hunger for accumulation of wealth, nurture supreme knowledge and wisdom in your mind,  keep your mind satisfied and happy with the fruit of Karma, don’t get drowned with excessive lust  in the beauty of women’s bosom and navel, these are just allocation of flesh, therefore do not let your mind think about it again and again.  Life of human is mysterious, it is uncertain like the dew drops on the lotus leaves; it is painful and sorrowful, perforating with illnesses, arrogance and grief.  As long as healthy you can support your family and be in the warmth of others, once the body get weak and deteriorated due to old age no one will be around you. As long as the soul remains inside the body, there will be people around you to enquire your well being, once the soul/Vayu/Prana departs from the body, even your wife will ran off from the sight of corpse.  Most of the childhood periods are spend in amusements; most of the adulthood periods are spend in inclination towards young maidens, most of the old age periods are spend in acute pain and sorrow, Alas! Only a few wants to get lost in the thoughts of Parambhramam.  Samsara/Life is mysterious, who is your wife? Who is your child? Where did you come from? Oh! Brother, think over the way of life.  Sathsang/association with the people of Sathvik/virtuous/righteous nature will benefit with Nissangathvam/detachment, the state of detachment will lead to the state of free from desire/illusion,  Nirmohathvam/free from illusion and desire will lead to serenity/Nishchalathathvam, ultimately it will take you to liberation from repeated births.  What is the use of desire for passionate sport when there is no youth?  What is the use of a pond where there is no water? Where are your close relatives when wealth is disappeared? Who is aware of the truth of Samsara ? Do not get bloated with your wealth, your beloved people, and your youth which will get destroyed in seconds, whole of the world is covered in illusion, therefore get yourself free from the illusion and attain the knowledge of supreme Bhramam.  All these daylight and darkness, day and night, winter and spring will come and go; in the same manner our life span also will get reduced, alas! Our storm of desires never ends.  Oh! Ignorant, why are you absorbed in the thought of accumulation of wealth? Is there no one to guide you? There is only one safest ferry which can help you from the unfathomable ocean of Samsara in the three worlds, therefore hurry up yourself to join in the safest ferry of Sajjanasangam/association with virtuous people.  There are people walk with matted hair locks, clean shaven head, clothed in saffron robes and in various appearances for livelihood,  even though after witnessing the reality they remains ignorant.  During the period of old age, body gets weaken and shrunken along with various changes appears, like baldness and absence of teeth, eventually practices to walk with the stick, Alas! Still all are heavily bounded to the worldly desires.  There lies  man who warm up in front of fire and Sun at the back, at night he curls up the body tightly in order to keep out of the cold, he consume meals that are offered as alms, still he is not relieved from the passion.  Several people go for holy dip in sacred waters of Ganga, some people may observe strict austerities, some people may offer alms and charities, Alas! If there is no wisdom and knowledge, it is impossible to attain liberation/Mukthi even after hundreds of births, therefore take shelter in the shrine or under the tree, sleep on the ground, sacrifice all those comforts and luxuries, follow the path of renunciation and undertake strict religious discipline, Is that devoid of contentment? People may find pleasure in Yoga/Yogic practices or Bhoga/amusement, some may remain detached or detached, but person who has the knowledge of Bhramam remains in eternal bliss.  Person who had recited a few verses of Bhagavad Gita, or person who have consumed a few drops of sacred waters of Ganga, or person who had immersed in the worship of Murari, definitely will not have the need to converse with Yama.   Oh! Murare, kindly protect us, we have been in the process of birth and death again and again, in this way we have been to mother’s womb again and again, and we have been into the world of Samsara which is insurmountable.   The supreme ascetic who is attired in shabby clothes, freed from pious as well as impure deeds, he is immersed in the union with the supreme Lord and lives in a state of eternal bliss like a child.  Who am I? Where did I come from? Who are my mother and father? These are meaningless to think and abandon the world as a dream.  Lord Vishnu dwells as soul in all the living beings, anger and impatience are meaningless, possessing equanimity and oneness in all leads to attainment of status of supreme Lord.  Do not try to differentiate people as enemies, companion, children, and relatives and this kind of analysis are futile, and follow the sense of oneness in all.  Discard your Kama/ lust and desires, Krodha/anger, Lobham/greed, and Moham/desire/delusion, familiarize with your real nature and attain knowledge of self and Athman/soul, ignorant who have no knowledge of self and supreme soul end up in hell and undergoes hellish torture for long.  Therefore, recite sacred scripture Gita and thousands of sacred names of Lord and meditate upon the magnificent form of Sripathi, remain in the association of righteous and virtuous people, distribute your wealth as charity among needy and poor people.  The person who chase for sensual pleasure eventually will end up with various illnesses, and wait for death, Alas! But never give up the sinful deeds.  Wealth does not bring permanent happiness, definitely there is no happiness in it, and it creates sense of insecurity, rich man will have threat from his own children, this is the nature of wealth.  Therefore, practice Pranayama/practice to control breath, Prathyahara/ renunciation, precise knowledge of permanent and impermanent, recitation of scriptures and intense meditation.  Person who is sincerely devoted to the lotus feet of Preceptor, would be relieved from the world of Samsara, with the practice of strict austerities and perfect control over senses you can experience the presence of supreme Lord in your heart.
