Sri Yamashtakam by Goddess Savithri – Sri Bhramavaivarththa Puranam - Lyrics and meanings

|| Jai Sriman Narayana ||

Savithri spoke “I shall offer my humble obeisance to Dharmaraja, Lord Surya underwent severe austerities and attained Yamuna and Dharmaraja who is the staunch follower of righteousness as his children.  I shall offer my humble Pranams to Dharmaraja who treats all the living beings one and the same, and truly righteous as his name.  I shall prostrate before Lord Dharmaraja, who performs the function of putting an end to the lives of living beings at the end of their Karma at appropriate time.  I shall prostrate before Lord Dharmaraja who is a great Preceptor of duties, punishes the sinners using his fierce weapon Dhandam.  I shall prostrate before Lord Dharmaraja who performs the duty of putting an end to the lives of all living beings in the Universe at an appropriate time.  I shall offer my humble Pranams to Lord Dharmaraja who is a true ascetic and sincere follower of Vaishnava Dharma, he has won over the senses, he disperses the fruit of Karma to living beings.  I shall prostrate before Lord Dharmaraja who is the son of Mithra/Lord Surya, he is staunch follower of Swadharma, and he is close associates of those who follow righteousness and punishes the sinners and wicked people.  I shall offer my humble obeisance to Dharmaraja who was born in the clan of Bhrama, he has the effulgence of Lord Bhrama, he meditates upon the absolute Bhramam/Parambramam, and I shall offer my humble salutation to the clan of Bhrama.”

Oh! Sage, in this way Savithri eulogized the glories of Lord Yama, due to pieties she had attained through her austerities and devotion to Lord Vishnu.  Whoever recites these glorious verses praising Lord Yama in the morning hours on daily basis, they would get rid of the fear of death and all the sins committed.  Oh! Maharishi Narada, person who had committed greatest of the sins, recites the above sacred hymns praising the glories of Dharmaraja on daily basis, it is definite that he would get purified before leaving this world.

Thus ends the glorious verses praising the grandeur of Lord Yama/Yamashtakam by Savithri described in the chapter Prakrithi Khandam in  Bhramavaivartha Puranam.
