I shall meditate upon Goddess Thulasi who is closest companion of Goddess Sri Mahalakshmi, she eradicates all kinds of sins of worshiper and provides abundance of pieties, I shall prostrate before Goddess Thulasi who is worshiped by Maharishi Naradha, she is dearest darling of Lord Narayana.   I shall prostrate before Goddess Thulasi who  is the source of happiness and auspiciousness, she eradicates miseries and illnesses of worshiper, I shall prostrate before Goddess Thulasi whose root is the dwelling place of all the sacred rivers, I shall prostrate before Goddess Thulasi whose stem is the abode of all the deities,  I shall prostrate before Goddess Thulasi whose top portion is the dwelling place of Veda and Upanishads.  I shall prostrate before Goddess Thulasi who symbolizes nectar, and auspiciousness, she eradicates miseries and sorrows of worshiper, she destroys fears and illnesses of the worshiper, I shall prostrate before Goddess Thulasi who is originated at the wish of deities, she is worshiped by Rishis and Sages, she eradicates all the sins of worshiper, she is beloved of Hara and Hari, she is the provider of fortune, virtuous offspring, wealth and abundance of grains and affluence, she is the provider of good health, she eradicates grief and miseries, Oh! Madhavapriye/darling of Madhava, kindly blesses us.  Whoever recites the glories of Thulasi and venerates the lotus feet of Goddess Thulasi on daily basis would remain unblemished.  I shall prostrate before Goddess Thulasi who eradicates worldly bondages of the worshiper; she cleanses the afflictions of worshiper, she is worshiped by the people who afflicted, veneration of Goddess Thulasi brings nearness to Lord Krishna, she is the provider of liberation from repeated births too.

In the first place, I shall meditate upon the lotus feet of Lord Keshva who is wielded in powerful wheel, he has the luster of fruit of Jambhu, I shall meditate Narayana on the westwards, he is wielded in Shakha/conch, he has the luster of dark clouds, I shall meditate upon Madhava on the upper regions, he has the luster of blue lily, he is wielded in Gadha/mace, I shall meditate upon Lord Govindha on the southwards, he is wielded on bow and arrows, he has the luster of moon,  I shall meditate upon Lord Vishnu on north, he is wielded in Hala/plough and holds lotus flower in his hand,  I shall medicate upon Aravindha on the south eastern region, he has the luster of lotus flower, he is Musali as well as Madhusoodhana, I shall meditate upon Lord Thrivikrama who is decked in Gadga on his hand,  I shall meditate upon Niruthi who has extreme brilliance, I shall meditate upon  Vamana on the northwest, he is wielded in Vajrayudha, he has the radiance of sun in the early hours of dawn,  I shall meditate upon Pundarikabha on the  north-eastern region, I shall meditate upon Lord Sreedhara who is wielded in Pattasayudha, I shall meditate upon Lord Hrishikesha who has the brightness of lightning, he is the controller of senses,  I shall meditate upon Lord Padmanabha who dwells on the lotus like my heart, he has the luster of thousands of sun, I shall meditate upon supreme Lord who is wielded in numerous powerful weapons, he is omniscient and omnipresent as well, he is decked in weapon Pasha in his hand, he is unconquerable, I shall meditate upon Lord Dhamodhara who is all pervading, whoever recites or listens to these glorious verses of Dvadhasha Pancharam would remain free from all kinds of fears.

Arjuna speaks “ Oh! Keshava kindly narrate the most propitious among thousands of sacred names, which is highly meritorious should be recited repeatedly.”


Lord Keshava speaks “ Mathsya/giant fish, Koorma/giant tortoise, Varaha/wild boar, Vamana/dwarf,  Janardhana who is the protector of living beings, Govindha who eradicates miseries and sorrows, Pundareekaksha who has the eyes resembles to lotus flower petals, Madhava who is the consort of Goddess Sri Mahalakshmi and Madhusoodhana who is the slayer of demon Madhu, Padmanabha who have lotus flower on navel, Sahasraksha who have thousands of eyes, Vanamali who is decked in garlands of flowers from wood, Halayudha who carries plough, Govardhana who elevated Mount Govardhana, Hrishikesha who is the Lord of senses,  Vaikunda who resides in the supreme abode of Sri Vaikundham, Purushoththama who is flawless among Purusha, Vishvaroopa who has massive form, Vasudeva who is unconquerable, Rama who is born in the illustrious clan of Raghu, Narayana who reclines in the milky ocean, Hari, Dhamodhara who was tied into mortal pastel by Yasodha, Sreedhara who carries Goddess Sri on his chest, Vedhanga who has  sacred Veda as limbs , Garudadhvaja who has flag that has the symbol of Garuda, Anantha who is personified as King of serpents, Krishna who is personified as son of  Devi Devaki and Vasudeva, Gopala who is the protector of cows and cowherds are the sacred names which are highly propitious and capable to eradicate all kinds of perils and miseries of the worshiper, whoever recites or listens to these sacred names would attain the   benefit of  offering  crores of cows as charity, performance hundreds of Ashwamedha Yagam, thousands of performance of Kanyadhanam/offering young maiden as bride to suitable bridegroom, these are propitious hymns should be recited on Amavasya, Pournamasya and Ekadhashi days, it should be recited during the hours of dusk, early hours of dawn and afternoon on regular basis, it eradicates all the sins of worshiper who recites these sacred verses with intense faith and devotion”.

I shall meditate upon supreme Lord Vishnu, contemplate upon Lord Vishnu becomes ultimate cure for all kinds of illnesses,  Lord Janardhana who is the protector of living beings should be meditated while consuming meals, Lord Padmanabha who has lotus flower on navel should meditated before going to bed, Lord Prajapathi who is the source of offspring should be meditated during the ceremony of marriage, Lord Chakradhara who is wielded in vicious wheel should be meditated in the battle field, Lord Thrivikrama who measured the whole of Universe with his three strides should be worshiped during the stay in far off lands, Lord Narayana who reclines in the milky ocean should be remembered while leaving the Earth/death,  Lord Sridhara who is Lord of wealth/Lord who carries Goddess Sri on his chest should be remembered while having pleasurable time with the  wife, Lord Govindha who is the protector of Universe and its living beings and cows should be remembered during the hours of nightmares, Lord Madhusoodhana who is the slayer of demon Madhu, destroyer of  miseries and grief should be remembered while extreme perils and sorrow,  Lord Narasimha should be remembered in the dense wood, Lord Jalashayin who reclines in the milky ocean should be worshiped for getting rid of sins, Lord Varaha should be remembered in the middle of ocean, Lord Raghunandhan who is born in the illustrious clan of Raghu should be remembered while expedition through the highest peaks,  Lord Vamana who is personified as dwarf should be remembered while travel, Lord Madhava who is the consort of Goddess Sri Mahalakshmi should be meditated at all times,  whoever reads or listens to the sixteen sacred names of Lord Vishnu during the early hours of dawn would get relieved from all sins, ultimately attain the abode of Lord Vishnu.

 “I shall always meditate upon Lord Mahesha who resides in  Rajathagiri/silver mountain/Mount Kailash, his face has the luster of moon, his limbs has the effulgence of precious gems, he is wielded in fierce weapon Parashu, he is attired in the skin of animal, he has pleasing disposition, he is seated on lotus flower, he is surrounded and eulogized  by deities and Rishis and Sages/Vyaghra, he is worshiped in the whole Universe, he is the source of Universe and its living beings, he is omnipresent, he is Hara who is the safest haven to worshiper, he have five faces and three eyes on each faces. “


“ Oh! Manuja/human, always meditate upon Girijapathi who is the consort of Goddess Sri Girija/daughter of Mount Himavan, he is Pashupathi who is the Lord of animals, he is Lord of Indhu/Indhupathi, he is Dharanipathi/Lord of Earth, he is the Lord of world of serpents/Bhujagalokapathi, he is Sathipathi/Lord of Uma, he eradicates all the miseries and perils of deities and fervent devotees, he is beyond human intellect, therefore always meditate upon Lord Girijapathi. Oh! Manuja, he is the source of Universe and its living beings, without his presence there is no living beings on Earth, or era,  or Janani, or brother or offspring, he is the source of strength of the clan, therefore always meditate upon Lord Girijapathi. Oh! Manuja, he is accompanied by the divine sounds of Dindivadhya, he is proficient in Veda and Vedantha, he is worshiped by illustrious Bhoothaganas, therefore always meditate upon Lord Girijapathi.  Oh! Manuja, he is the safest haven to worshiper, he is the provider of happiness and welfare, he is Shiva who symbolizes auspiciousness, he is deserved to be venerated and eulogized,  he is too compassionate, he is the ultimate refuge, he is the provider of abundance of boons to worshiper, therefore always meditate upon Lord Girijapathi.  Oh! Manuja, he is decked in garlands of skull, he is adorned in magnificent earrings, he is decorated in serpents as ornaments, he has flag that carries the symbol of Vrishabha/celestial bull, he is fair complexioned, he has great effulgence, therefore always meditate upon Lord Girijapathi.  Oh! Manuja, he symbolizes auspiciousness, he is decorated in crescent moon on matted hair locks, he should be worshiped with specific rites and he provides abundance of pieties for the performance of fire sacrifices, he causes deluge that absorbs all the living beings and Universe at the end of Kalpa, therefore always meditate upon Lord Girijapathi.  Oh! Manuja, he should be meditated with intense faith and devotion, he eradicates all that perils and miseries of  Maranam/death, Jananam/birth, and Jara/aging in the world of Samsara, therefore always meditate upon Lord Girijapathi.  Oh! Manuja, he is worshiped by Lord Hari, Lord Bhrama, and all the deities, he is reverentially greets by Yama and Dhanesha/Kubera, he have three eyes, he is the Lord of three worlds, therefore always meditate upon Lord Girijapathi.”


The above are the glorious verses of Pashupathi Ashtakam praising the splendor of Lord Pashupathi was composed by Prithvipathi/Lord Vishnu, whoever reads or listens to it on regular basis  would permanently reside in the abode of Lord Shiva/Shivapuri.
